Avneet Panesar is an Associate Solicitor at ITN solicitors.

Avneet specialises in all areas of children law; particularly international children matters concerning parental child abduction, cross-border contact disputes, international relocation, reciprocal enforcement of foreign orders and jurisdiction disputes. Avneet deals with emergency cases in the High Court including urgent applications to prevent unlawful abduction of children or to return children to their home country. Avneet is regularly instructed by parents in the UK and abroad.  

Avneet was involved in the first reported case concerning an abducted child being returned to Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022, a reported case concerning the return of an abducted child to India (a country not part of the Hague Convention) and case issuing guidance on the role of solicitors acting as solicitor-guardians for children in international child abduction matters.

Avneet specialises in other aspects of family law arising from a relationship breakdown concerning issues of child relocation, allegations of child abuse, disputes concerning custody/ residence, and contact arrangements

Avneet also advises on matters relating to domestic abuse and Female Genital Mutilation.

Avneet is a member of the Society of Asian Lawyers.

Avneet speaks fluent Panjabi and conversational Hindi and Urdu.

Prominent Cases

J v J (return to Non-Hague Convention Country) [2021] EWHC 2412 (Fam) – the court ordered the return of a child from the UK to his home in India giving guidance on how an application for a summary return of a child to a non-Hague convention country is determined by the child’s best interests and the welfare checklist.

Q v R [2022] EWHC 2961 (Fam) - this was the first reported case concerning an abducted child being returned to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. The court clarified that they must avoid generalities and evaluate particular risk to the particular child at the time and consider whether that risk can be managed to ensure if does ot cause the child harm.

C v M (A Child) (Abduction: Representation of Child Party) [2023] EWCA Civ 1449 – the court gave important guidance on the role of a solicitor-guardian representing children in court proceedings without being a qualified social worker.”
