Four Things You Should Do Before a Court Hearing

If you’ve never been to a court hearing then the whole experience can feel very daunting, however, this is often a critical stage for any case. As well as taking professional advice from your solicitor, there are a few things you can do to prepare for your court date and ensure that you present yourself well.

Here are four things that you should do before your court hearing.

Plan your route to court

If you are unsure where the courthouse is or you are travelling to a different city, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the route. The last thing you want is to turn up late as that won’t set a good first impression and could leave you stressed out before proceedings have even begun!

Dress appropriately

You don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe when appearing in court but you do need to dress appropriately. Smart, formal clothing should be worn instead of jeans and leisurewear but make sure that you feel comfortable. Remember, the court is a formal setting and arriving in a well-groomed manner is the best way forward. If you need greater clarification on what to wear, your solicitor can provide you with more information and advice.

Go over details with your solicitor

You should remain in contact with your solicitor in the run-up to your hearing. Ask them to go over the schedule so you have a good understanding of how the session will pan out and what you can expect - this is why it’s important to arrive early so you can meet with your solicitor before the hearing. Plus, doing so can make you feel less anxious.

Prepare and relevant paperwork

Although your solicitor will probably handle all of the legal paperwork that needs to be done, you may need to bring other documents with you. If so, make sure to prepare them before the day of your hearing and keep them all together in a file so you can grab them before you go and don’t end up rushing around in the morning!
