We have a vacancy for a Criminal Costs Clerk to join our dynamic and growing team. The Department

ITN’s Crime Department is recognised as one of the leading criminal practices in the country. It is a busy, dynamic and diverse working environment presenting opportunities to engage in a wide variety of work. The department attracts work not only from its local duty solicitor schemes but also from its large and ever growing own client following, receiving instructions not only from locally based clients but also those based across the country and even abroad.

The department is known for its fearless and dynamic approach to litigation and the ability to find and apply novel solutions to cases with difficult legal and factual issues. ITN has developed a strong reputation for successfully representing clients in the more challenging and complex aspects of criminal law work.

The department covers the full spectrum of criminal defence work including business crime and regulatory offences, serious organised crime, terrorism cases and general ‘street’ crime. The firm is also at the forefront of cases involving protest law, police powers, terrorism law and national security issues with members of the firm regularly conducting training, contributing to legal textbooks and providing their opinions to local and national media and even on occasion to Parliament.

The day-to-day work we do covers everything from pre-arrest negotiations through to advice and assistance at the police station and representation at the Magistrates’ Court and/or the Crown Court. The department also has a healthy appellate and CCRC practice with a strong track record at the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. The firm has also established a growing a client base for extradition work.

The department works closely with all of our other departments but in particular with our Prison Law and Actions against the Police Departments.

The Applicant Specification

  • experience of submitting crime claims to the Legal Aid Agency including at least one of the following:
  • Police Station and Magistrates Court work
  • Appeals/CCRC work and Prison Law claims
  • Crown Court - Litigator Graduated Fees
  • Crown Court - Advocates Graduated Fees
  • Costs from Central Funds
  • experience of submitting payments on accounts (preferred but not essential)
  • experience of submitting interim bills (preferred but not essential)
  • experience of dealing with applications for review, redetermination and general costs appeals
  • strong working knowledge of rules and guidance on criminal costs claims
  • some accounts experience would be an advantage but is not essential
  • excellent numerical skills
  • self-motivated with the ability to work on own initiative and to tight deadlines
  • excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with confidence in being able to advise and  liaise with senior managers and fee earners
  • excellent IT skills with ability to process information using relevant software (databases, spreadsheet, case management systems and accounts packages, relevant legal aid websites/claims portals)
  • business acumen

The Role

The successful applicant will become a valued and integral member of our crime team although the role will also involve working with our Accounts team. The role will include:

  • using the firm’s Case Management Software to prepare claims for:
  • Police Station and Magistrates Court work
  • Appeals/CCRC work and Prison Law claims
  • Crown Court - Litigator Graduated Fees
  • Crown Court - Advocates Graduated Fees
  • Costs from Central Funds;
  • submitting appropriate claims electronically using the relevant Legal Aid claims portal;
  • submitting appropriate claims on paper using the appropriate Legal Aid Agency/Court claim forms;
  • communicating with LAA and Courts if necessary to resolve any billing issues;
  • submitting applications for redetermination and appeals against assessment as appropriate;
  • assisting in submitting appeals to Supreme Court Costs Office as appropriate;
  • efficient file management (including scanning of physical documents if necessary);
  • updating claim information on firm’s Case Management Software;
  • effective diary management to ensure compliance with time limits for submitting claims and appeals;
  • maintaining knowledge of claims rules and procedures and keeping up to date with changes;
  • reporting to Criminal Department Co-ordinator and Management Team;
  • liaising with fee earners to deal with costs queries and feedback to improve cost effectiveness;
  • liaising with Accounts Team and assisting with relevant accounts functions;
  • working individually or as part of a team as necessary
